Dog Poisoning Symptom

There are some substances which are safe for humans but yet are toxic when come in contact with dogs, and vice-versa. However, some substances are poisonous to both humans and dogs, the symptoms experienced by humans are also quite similar to symptoms experienced by dogs. The treatment for dog poisoning is largely similar in many cases. 

Symptoms of dog poisoning
  1. vomiting
  2. diarrhoea
  3. lack of appetite
  4. general lethargy
  5. breathing difficulties
  6. fever
  7. over-salivation


They are very obvious tell tale signs and if you spot them, you should inform a vet. It is crucial that your dog is treated using appropriate drugs, the only person capable is someone with prerequisite veterinary knowledge. Don’t take the risk of self medication, as you most likely cannot treat these symptoms with over the counter medication.

More serious symptoms include breathing difficulties, fever or over-salivation, and should be dealt with immediately. Identify the origins of the poison. Have you taken your dog outside today? Could it be something indoors? Most medication for human use are poisonous to dogs. If your dog has consumed some pills that you left on the kitchen counter, they could have become poisoned.

Your dog could also have consumed something from the trash or perhaps they ate some venomous plants. You should try to identify what poisoned your dog. This is important to vets as different forms of poisoning require different treatment.

Symptoms of plant poisoning 

  1. irritation around the dog’s mouth
  2. drooling from the mouth or nose
  3. swelling around the mouth or throat
  4. excessive thirst
  5. upset stomach
  6. dilated eyes
  7. difficulty with breathing
  8. weakness
  9. disorientation
  10. shaking
  11. irregular heartbeat
  12. coma
